10 of the BEST Houseplants for Any Office Environments in the UK or maybe anywhere!

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

This list covers ten plants that have fantastic abilities to remove toxins from the air; they don’t shed a great deal and rarely flower (avoiding sneezing!) and are great oxygen boosters for your office space! We've also looked for low-maintenance options!

1. Aloe Vera

A personal favourite for any home, office, or occasion!

Aloe vera is known for its soothing gel, beneficial for minor burns and skin irritations and a heck of a lot more!

It's also a ridiculously easy-to-care-for succulent that thrives in bright, indirect light and helps improve indoor air quality by removing pollutants.

2. Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica)

Rubber plants are hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for office spaces. They can tolerate low light and help remove toxins from the air. Their gorgeous large, glossy leaves that can add a touch of greenery (younger plants) or a masculine darker hue, to your workspace.

3. Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)

Boston ferns are popular for their lush, feathery fronds and air-purifying qualities. Thriving in high humidity, this makes them a good choice if you like the heating turned up (but keep a bowl of water nearby to maintain moisture levels!). Boston ferns prefer indirect light and help remove pollutants like formaldehyde.

4. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)

Chinese evergreens have absolutely stunning foliage variations as well as air-purifying capabilities. They can tolerate low light conditions and are relatively low-maintenance - always a plus!

5. Monstera (Monstera deliciosa)

Monstera plants hold a special place in my heart as my granny had many of them...BUT, they're back in fashion with their uniquely split leaves and tropical vibes. They prefer bright, indirect light but can adapt to just about anywhere while they have a great ability to improve air quality by filtering out common indoor pollutants.

6. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

Snake plants thrive in low-light conditions and are resilient to neglect. They need minimal watering but almost 'tell' you when they need a top up!

They're great at turning CO2 into oxygen, making them excellent air purifiers.

7. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Spider plants are adaptable and easy to care for, making them perfect for office settings. They do well in indirect and direct sunlight and are a lot more hardy than they look - I know this first hand! Once a week watering is usually enough.

Despite their delicate appearance, spider plants are excellent at removing pollutants like formaldehyde and xylene from the air.

If looked after, they do have lovely little flowers, but BEWARE, these plants multiply and make excellent gifts for every customer, neighbour and team member. Their'offspring' are called 'pups'!

8. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

As well as making stunning gifts that last for years and years, Peace lilies are renowned for their air-purifying qualities, removing common pollutants like benzene and formaldehyde. They thrive in low to medium light conditions and can certainly add a touch of elegance to your office space! They like the room to be slightly warmer and start to droop if you neglect their watering. Also, avoid having them if you have cats about or someone that reacts to their occassional blooms!

9. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

ZZ plants are hardy, drought-tolerant, and can thrive in low-light conditions (I should probably just have loads of these...).

They are excellent at removing toxins such as xylene, toluene, and benzene from the air - so great if you work in or near an industrial area!

ZZ plants have glossy, dark green leaves that add a modern aesthetic to the office environment, without being boring!

10. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Another personal favourite! Despite their stunning, delicate appearance, Pothos is super resilient and can tolerate a variety of light conditions.

This plant is known for its trailing vines and heart-shaped leaves and if you're short on space, makes an excellent hanging plant!

Pothos is effective at removing indoor air pollutants, as well, and adds a touch of the 'wow' factor to your workspace. It will grow rapidly if looked after but regular pruning can help control its size.

We hope you enjoyed this little distraction from your workload! Seriously, though, having a few plants in your office space will most certainly make a significant change to the aesthetic, and the mood of the people sharing your space!
